The most important week of Design in Brazil, DW! São Paulo Design Week held from November 8th to 14th, included the Design Oriundi exhibition, which brought together creations by 21 national designers and companies, including Santa Luzia Hammocks and Decoration.

The project carried out by the curator and international consultant Miss Joice Joppert, CEO of Object Brazil, was based on the origins of Brazilian design and remained on display until November 22nd. The pieces were set at By Kamy and at Idália located at Alameda Gabriel Monteiro da Silva Street, in Jardim América, area from São Paulo recognized as a reference in the production of luxury consumption and contemporary design products.

For the curator, the hammocks and hammocks-chair by the Santa Luzia Hammocks and Decoration were highlighted at the show for rekindling affective memories, in addition to awakening the public’s eye to the beauty of handcrafted work.

“It is a company that for three decades has been dedicated to issues of sustainability, environmental preservation and socio-economic development. In addition to the handmade details, the strands of the hammock fabric are made of natural cotton, without additives or dyes. The organic natural colored cotton that is born in beige and brown tones is produced without irrigated culture and the water savings in this production process are quite high”, comments Miss Joice.

For the specialist, the Design – an important sector of the Creative Economy – acts in the economic, social and environmental sustainability of the country, in addition to promoting the valuation of products and services in a tangible and intangible way. In other words, design disseminates, beyond form and function, concepts of citizenship that help to promote development through income generation, quality of life and investments. “The DW! it’s a great opportunity for us to reflect on all of this,” she said.

The exhibition also shows the influence of immigrants on the Brazilian design

The exhibition project had as its research the migratory flows and the influence of Italians, Arabs, Japanese, Portuguese, Spanish, Jews and other peoples in the formation of the design produced in Brazil. As a result, pieces from Araucari, Guto Requena, Nao Yuasa, Guilherme Wentz and Pedro Petry, among others. “All the designers involved in the exhibition bring the load of their descendants to the work”, attests Miss Joice. The curator was also looking for works in partnership with the platforms Fair in Rosembaun and Marcos 500

Also, as part of the program, there was the launch of the book “Design and Circular Economy”, with design and editorial coordination by Miss Joice Joppert herself who is co-author of the book at the invitation of Editor SENAI SP.

Curator also held an exhibition in Milan

In 2019 Santa Luzia Hammocks and Decoration participated in the Brazil Essentially Diverse Show – presented during the Milan Furniture Show, with 2,000m². The curatorship was done by Miss Joice, the guest of Apex-Brasil. The exhibition brought together the diversity of the Brazilian creative economy with highlights in handicrafts, folk arts, design and activities related to music and gastronomy, with great repercussion and opening of business for Brazilian designers and companies.

Cotton represents 65% of textile inputs, which characterizes this raw material as strategic for the national industry. However, the intense use of water and pesticides has transformed ordinary cotton into one of the most polluting commodities in the world. The “2025 Sustainable Cotton Challenge”, guided by the UN Sustainable Development Goals (SDGs), secured an agreement with 39 transnational companies that have committed to develop products with 100% sustainable cotton. In Brazil, less than 1% of cotton production is of organic origin. Included in the percentage, colored cotton is gaining prominence.
Since 2006 The Santa Luzia Hammocks and Decoration has grown natural and organic colored cotton on 20 hectares to supply its own production of hammocks and blankets. With the growing demand, the company increased its agricultural production by 300% to also serve weavers and other partners in the South and Southeast of the country.
So far, there are 60 hectares producing 1,200 kilos of cotton per hectare in municipalities surrounding the textile factory located in São Bento, Paraiba state. The project foresees the planting of 100 hectares of cotton in 2021. “We are promoting the resumption of cotton culture in the State, which was already the leader of the country’ explains Mr. Armando Dantas, executive of the textile company.
The interest in textile products is being absorbed by other sectors related to well-being, such as Positiv.a, which offers ecological products for cleaning the house. Miss Marcela Zambardino, co-founder and coCEO of the company, explains the choice of fabrics from Santa Luzia: “Plain cotton is one of the most polluting commodities in the world. And organic cotton, when composing pieces signed by stylists, becomes an expensive product. A cleaning cloth may be the only organic cotton inside the home. And our customers also buy because they want to support a national product, which respects and values the land and the people”.
The expansion of cotton in Paraiba state is strengthening agricultural communities
The Santa Luzia’s CEO is part of a generation of leaders who anticipate a new industry reality giving priority to sustainability and transparency. The entrepreneurial initiative is supported by several institutions – public and private.
One of these supports comes from the Paraiba Company of Research, Rural Extension and Land Regularization – Empaer, whose technicians bring knowledge to the activity by teaching the farmer to take care of the land in the semiarid, with peculiarities due to the low rainfall rate. For Mr. Nivaldo Moreno Magalhães, president of Empaer, the action of maintaining a local productive arrangement that stands out for being in a remote and socially vulnerable area is commendable. “This brings a significant benefit to these families who used to plant only for subsistence and, today, already nurture new perspectives”, he declares.
According to Mr. Luiz Sávio, manager of the Institute of Textile and Clothing Technology at Senai /Paraiba STATE , the entity supports the expansion initiative, mainly for the benefit of feather.
Savio observes the impact of local production. While the state of Paraiba in 2019 produced 20 tons of colored feathered organic cotton including Santa Luzia production, this company alone is expected to produce more than 25 tons later this year.
For agribusiness specialist Mr.Gilvan Ramos, from the Brazilian Agricultural Research Corporation – Embrapa Cotton, The Santa Luzia Co today represents, in the state of Paraiba and in Brazil, an industrial-commercial enterprise for exploitation technology of naturally colored cotton technology. “Alongside other micro-entrepreneurial ventures, the initiative is the most complete because its work schedule and projects developed to date have a beginning, middle and end”, he says.
For the CEO of Santa Luzia Hammocks and Decoration, the creation of the 2025 Sustainable Cotton Challenge should help large companies to keep their focus on environmentally friendly development. Soon, even small textile companies should put sustainable cotton at the center of their business and The Santa Luzia Co will be the alternative because it has the production chain in full capacity to serve them. “Our proposal is to offer cotton with high added value because it is a raw material aligned with the principles of environmental, economic and social sustainability”.

In addition to recycled yarn, the textile factory uses Paraiba’s natural and organic colored cotton planted and harvested in partnership with family farming in the semiarid region.

The Santa Luzia Hammocks and Decoration, a textile company based since 1986 in São Bento, Paraíba state, produces hammocks, blankets, cushions, curtains, shawls – among other accessories and utilities using ecological raw materials such as organic colored cotton and yarn of recycled cotton. The annual collections focus on the slow living public, with consumption interested in the production process.
With a focus on sustainability – using ecological raw materials and local development with organic colored cotton plantation in the Paraíba state, Northeastern Brazil – The Santa Luzia exposes its production chain that involves the guaranteed purchase contract with farmers to appreciation of traditional crafts.
“We planted the Paraíba organic colored cotton in a family farming system in partnership with farmers gathered by association in land reform settlements, small farms and also in traditional Quilombola communities,” explains Mr. Armando Dantas, the company’s CEO. “The weaving of the threads is done in the factory, but the crafts (macramé, crochet, lace, embroidery, patchwork, among other techniques) are performed by women in their own homes to be able to be available to care for their children. There are 400 families involved in these stages of cultivation and manual work”, he says.
One of the key points for the company, located in the lowland rainfall region and with frequent droughts, is not to use water in the production chain. The Paraíba’s organic colored cotton is already born in shades ranging from beige to brown without the use of additives or dyes. According to the Brazilian Agricultural Research Corporation – Embrapa, which developed the seed, because it avoids the dyeing stage and is cultivated in non-irrigated soil, the impact on production is a reduction of water consumption of 87.5% compared to a common, industry-dyed cotton product.
In this way, the Santa Luzia Hammocks and Decoration presents to the market a raw material within the parameters of sustainable development with economic, environmental and social aspects interacting. “In addition to production, comes the cultural and innovation issue, such as design, complementing the concept of products developed by the company”, adds Mr. Dantas.
The other raw material, the recycled yarn, also eliminates water use because cotton comes from textile waste. Once separated by color, the cotton is defibrated. And to make it possible to turn a new fabric, need to fuse these fibers with PET bottle yarn – also recycled.
Local and International Recognition
The Santa Luzia Hammocks and decoration is guided by sustainability and innovation – preserving in its products the cultural characteristic based on craft work. Its executive – who began his career as a craftsman producing by selling door-to-door hammocks- today exports eco-friendly yarn products to Europe, North America and Africa.
In 2018 Mr. Dantas received the Southern Cone Craft Excellence Recognition award from the World Crafts Council (WCC) on the recommendation of the United Nations Educational, Scientific and Cultural Organization – UNESCO.

In the moonlight of the backwoods the dream of an abundant harvest was fulfilled. The last major drought in the State of Paraíba lasted six years, but this time the drought did not prevent the colored cotton from germinating in the arid soil of the city of São Bento. For the farmer Mr. Flaviano Alves, who was struggling due to lack of water and lack of funding, the project to expand the Paraiba Colored Cotton plantation emerged, in his words, “as a light at the end of the tunnel.” He received the seeds for free and reaped this month a crop of about 1200 kilos. Now it plans to double production. The motivation comes from the practice of guaranteed purchase contract with immediate payment on delivery – which gives farmers credibility and enthusiasm.
Since the beginning of the year, the textile company Santa Luzia Hammocks and Decoration has been spreading seeds in the region. The crop expansion project includes 40 families working in a family farming system in settlements, associations and the quilombola community. In all, 20 hectares were planted. The total harvest of about 24 tons of colored cotton will be transformed into yarns, fabrics, utilities and decoration accessories sold to the national and international markets.
Mr. Armando Dantas, CEO of the company, already has successful experience with planting and harvesting colored cotton. Since 2012 he has been working on this system with the Margarida Maria Alves Settlement farmers in Juarez Távora, also in the semiarid, on an area of 18 hectares. “Expanding production ensures service to the sustainable decoration market, but it is also a dream come true. It is about rescuing the family farming culture and cotton cultivation that made history in our state,” he says.
The project called “Santa Luzia of Colored Cotton” includes new 20 hectares: Quilombola Community of Newfoundland, Genipapo Community of Lucios, among other various associations. The planting started in late February culminated in the Field Day on June 28, with the land full of cotton feathers. The event brought together public and private institutions attracted the attention of other farmers interested in cultivating the plant that the company transforms into decorative hammocks and accessories for the national and international market.
Institutional support helps to move the supply chain.
The Field Day is a special day to multiply knowledge by sharing narratives and processes. The Santa Luzia Hammocks and Decoration, for example, before implementing the project, sought support to create favorable conditions in the face of a vulnerable climate environment. From the municipal administration of São Bento and Brejo da Cruz came tractors to cut the sturdy ground. “It is important to enforce the redemption of a historic São Bento brand, which is Paraíba’s colored cotton,” confirmed the Landlord Mr. Jarques Lúcio.
The Brazilian Agricultural Research Corporation (Embrapa), developer of the seeds, contributed with knowledge. “Colored cotton is a drought-resistant plant and can be grown with little water – as long as this little water is given to the crop at the right time,” explains agronomist Mr. Gilvan Ramos of Embrapa Cotton. Since none of the areas have irrigation, it needs to be planted before the rainy season, even though it is scarce in the region.
Support from the State Government was received through agricultural technicians from the Paraibana Company for Research, Rural Extension and Land Regularization (Empaer). The institution has the function of technology transfer, enabling the property to have profit and income. “Empaer has the role of organizing the organic production system, providing family farmers with low-cost agroecological management techniques that improve productivity and ensure food security,” said Mr. Jefferson Ferreira, director of technical assistance and rural extension at Empaer.
For 58-year-old farmer Mr. Paulo de Lima, who in the past saw his experience with rice and banana plantations evaporate along with the water from the Piranhas River, a tributary of the city, there is now a new perspective. “Before it was all disorganized. We harvested and had no buyer, only a middleman.” In the countryside, the figure of the trader is not well regarded because, despite bridging the farmer with the means of distribution and marketing, he often does not pay the farmer fairly.
The Santa Luzia Hammocks and Decoration already plans to double the area planted in 2020. And also continue to plead with the public agencies for support for farmers to acquire a ginner. “Cotton seeds serve as the basis for the ration of dairy cows and fattening oxen. This is a great market. Buyers travel 1700 km to buy lumps in Bahia. As we are only 70 kilometers away, we are missing out on new business opportunities.” The businessman, who works in the company the concept of sustainability, knows that agricultural activities in this region have indicators of fragility. “The project has the potential to ensure economic, social and environmental sustainability. But you can’t do it alone. We need to ensure partnerships that provide conditions for farmers to operate, it is an interdependent relationship where together we are strong,” he explains.
About the company

In the Creative Economy, Craftwork is a sector that contributes with the expression and cultural preservation presenting to the market the aesthetic values and identity of a people. In São Bento, Paraiba, the textile production carried out in Santa Luzia Hammocks and Decoration in manual and mechanical looms – with handcrafted finishes – brought Sir Armando Dantas, executive of the company, the “Recognition of Excellence in Handicraft of the Southern Cone” award.
The award was given by the World Crafts Council (WCC) with support, protection and recommendation from the United Nations Educational, Scientific and Cultural Organization (UNESCO). As an international organization, Unesco is a reference for the global vision of the socio-cultural and economic role of handicrafts in society.
The selected artisan products meet the following criteria and conditions: the award recognizes that a craft product (or product line) follows the criteria of technical quality, innovation, cultural bond and production with respect to the environment. Another criterion is the possibility of the product being marketed internationally.
Who presented the handcrafted products of the State of Paraíba for the selection was M. Eduardo Barroso. As a consultant and coordinator of the city’s João Pessoa Creative City program, he was present at the Assembly of the World Council of Handicrafts, held in Uruguay, whose programming included the selection of handicraft products from the Southern Cone countries: Brazil, Argentina, Paraguay, Uruguay and Chile.
Environmental, social and economic sustainability
Focusing on sustainability, the award-winning hammock was developed in Paraiba using colored organic cotton. The certified cotton pen is already born with shades ranging from beige to brown, without the use of additives or dyes. The cultivation of the raw material is done without irrigation in the semi-arid region in rural settlement. As there is no dyeing, the impact on the water economy is 87.5% in the production chain, according to the Brazilian Agricultural Research Company – Embrapa. The contract is a guaranteed purchase so that farmers and their families can stay in the field, maintaining their traditions and living in a dignified way.
Mr. Dantas received the news with emotion. “The sensation is of overcoming. We have dreams. We have cause. We are insistent. We went through a crisis and it was very difficult, but in a collective decision we set the goal of being the best in our industry and everyone engaged. The award is a validation that our efforts were not in vain, “says the responsible for bringing business culture to the craft in their region.
Excellence as a result of innovation
Mr. Barroso explains that the award is made every three or four years, with no predetermined date. The recognition is given by region such as Andean countries, Central America and the Caribbean, Northern Europe, Asia, among others. According to the consultant is not a design award. “It is about recognizing excellence in the execution of artisanal work,” he says.
For Mr. Armando Dantas the recognition of excellence in execution is also the result of investment in innovation. When he was advised to adapt the TexBrasil export program of the Brazilian Association of the Textile and Apparel Industry – ABIT, Mr. Armando was warned that artisanal work on its products would be even more valued abroad. “We used to make handicrafts, but the consultancy has broadened our vision of the market,” he says. Thus, with the support of the SEBRAE, Mr. Armando Dantas kept the focus on developing products aligned with the decoration sector by investing in design, to ensure productivity, and in marketing, to increase demand. ¬¬ “Marketing has helped reach the market by communicating our creative and productive capacity in the creation and development of handcrafted and sustainable furniture and decoration products,” he says.
In this way, Mr. Dantas, which for 32 years sold door-to-door hammocks, now exports to Europe, North America and Africa. He is one of those responsible for São Bento City being known as the “international capital of the hammocks” and for keeping alive several manual techniques in the region and in the surroundings. In addition to the Santa Luzia Hammoks and Decoration textile factory, the artisanal production involves 400 families from the Paraíba hinterland. In the finishes are used macramé, lace, crochet, fuxico, patchwork, among other techniques made exclusively by hand.
The work of Mr Dantas at the head of the textile factory proposes the rescue of regional vocations, the preservation of the local culture, the promotion of family farming and the stimulus to entrepreneurship – enabling craftsmen to market. Excellence in execution, as a result of the engagement of those involved in the process, has now been officially recognized, contributing to the acceptance of its products in the internal and external markets.
Prize in João Pessoa – Creative City of Unesco
In total, 20 handicrafts from the five countries were awarded. Of Brazil, of the four winning products, three are from Paraíba. In addition to Mr Armando Dantas from the Santa Luzia Hammocks and Decoration, the craftsmen Joaquim da Silva Neto (Joca from Galos) were awarded with a bunch of leaves of fanders (cans) and Fernando Valentim (Mestre Valentim) with a marquetry bottle. Another product that gained recognition was a basket of Jalapão’s golden grass in the state of Tocantins.
The award “Recognition of the Southern Cone’s Artisan Excellence” was presented by Mr Alberto Bertolaza, president of the World Council of Handicrafts for Latin America (2010-2018) – coming from Uruguay especially for the closing of the International Fair of Creative Economy of João Pessoa, coordinated by Mr Barroso. The ceremony was attended by Mr Idrassen Vencatachelum, director of the International Craft Development Network, Miss Maísa Cartaxo, first lady of João Pessoa city , and Miss Regina Amorim, Sebrae Paraíba’s Tourism Manager.
“This recognition means a lot to us artisans. I started life as a street seller, I have an artisan’s portfolio and a lot of pride in this story that today generates jobs and helps in the development of the Criative Economy in João Pessoa city and also in the city of São Bento says Mr Dantas, of Santa Luzia Hammocks and Decoration , who spoke on behalf of the winners.

Increasingly aligned with the concept of sustainable economy, Santa Luzia Hammocks and Textiles takes part in the event Spoga + gafa in Cologne, Germany, from September 04 to 06, considered the largest fair of gardening and decoration in the world. The products, which are successful in Brazil and other countries, will be shown to about 40 thousand visitors from 110 countries, who gather to see firsthand what’s most innovative and beautiful on landscaping and outdoor decoration. The industry moves more than R $ 2.5 billion in Brazil.
Standing out for working with Eco raw materials, such as organic color cotton and recycled yarn, from fabric scraps mixed with PET bottles, the company will exhibit products such as hammocks, blankets, shawls for sofas, carpets, placemats, curtains and cushions. “We are sure the fair will be a success and also our participation in it,” says Armando Dantas, CEO. “For some time we have been looking at this event as a great opportunity, because the market needs innovative proposals and companies seeking customer satisfaction”, he says.
The expansion of the brand is one of the reasons for investment in the international market. “I believe that we are able to hold this space as our company has been in the market for 30 years, serving customers directly in our seven stores in the cities of São Bento and João Pessoa (PB), Fortaleza (CE), Natal (RN) and Brasilia (DF), in addition to having a qualified team to meet the domestic and international markets.” says Dantas.
Participation in the Spoga + gafa is one of the strategies to conquer the European market, whose consumers view sustainable production as a competitive differentiator. “We currently have
Whole exclusive production chain, from the raw material to completion of the parts. The organic color cotton yarn is purchased from settlements and communities working in a Family Agriculture system, and the recycled yarn is purchased from textile companies and mixed with PET bottles material. The company also has an exclusive factory in another country, its own weaving and the hand work of skilled artisans, who have been allies since its foundation and make the manual finishing of products, transforming them into works of art. “concludes the CEO.
The Fair – The Spoga + gafa is the world’s largest fair of products and garden accessories. It is held annually in Cologne, Germany, and has the participation of 2,012 exhibitors from 56 countries and around 40,000 visitors from 110 countries. With a total area of 240,000 m², the exhibition is divided into four thematic areas: garden unique, garden living, garden creation & care, and garden bbq.

The staff at Santa Luzia Hammocks and Textiles, in São Bento, in the outback of Paraiba, took a break from work to learn a little more about the importance of using personal protective equipment. The presentation, conducted by the judge, and head of the Safe Work Programme, promoted by the Labor Court of Paraíba, George Falcão, revealed that more than 40 people are taken off their duties due to accidents or work-related diseases each day.
The CEO Armando Dantas praised the initiative. “It was something I never thought would happen. Business traditional previous view is that the company was there only to demand and to judge. And now we are actually seeing that times have changed, that re-education is needed so that the rights and duties of employers and employees are respected, “he said.
Dantas stressed the responsibility of businesses to promote Fair Trade, “In our company, all employees are registered. In São Bento, most factories are informal (family business, machines in a space of your own home), where the families themselves run the business and therefore think that there is the need to register staff because they are all members of the same family.
With this work carried out by the labour court, these informal / family businesses will become aware and find out the benefits that can have “he said.
The event – For two days, the Labour Court of Paraiba was in São Bento, in the outback of the State, with educational activities at the open market, state school and hammocks factory, and held hearings on labor disputes filed in the city.

The hammocks reached the catwalk turned into clothes by the hands of stylist João Pimenta. The collection was exhibited at the 41st SPFW, with the collaboration of Santa Luzia hammocks and textiles, which offered colorful cotton fabrics (in partnership with the Natural Cotton Color) and recycled yarn from textile waste (Already sorted by color to avoid staining) and recycled PET bottles—which ensures greater resistance to the yarn.

The designer João Pimenta visited the plant in São Bento in January and found in the backlands of Paraiba the hammocks that have become raw material for his collection.

Armando Dantas, CEO of Santa Luzia hammocks and textiles, and Walleska Dantas, director of the factory, went to São Paulo and were amazed to see the parade on the 28th of May, at the Bienal Pavilion, in Ibirapuera Park. “I had never imagined our hammocks in a fashion collection. It was nice to see the swing of hammocks on the body, especially the details of fringes made of macramé, used so creatively by the designer. And the recycled cotton yarn was also well incorporated in the creation of other fabrics, lighter and sophisticated, produced in more advanced looms in other textile companies which also collaborate with Joao Pimenta, “said Armando.

In addition to the fabrics developed by Santa Luzia hammocks and textiles, Armando and Walleska Dantas provided colorful cotton yarn and cotton with recycled PET bottles for the creation of new fabrics—thinner and lighter—which were developed by Joao Pimenta at other textile companies.

From the rustic fabric of the hammocks a collection of tailor-made uniforms emerged.

The assortment of handmade and mechanical looms enchanted the designer, who took the opportunity to dive into the history of the production process of the company, created 30 years ago. “I was really in love with everything and passion is my creativity’s fuel. I made the first piece and showed Paulo Borges (founder and director of the São Paulo Fashion Week) and the stylist Daniel Ueda—who are more experienced. They were amazed when I said that it was a hammock transformed into costume (blazer). I received all the support and encouragement to continue, “he said.

Joao Pimenta used the uniform—a universal, timeless and genderless piece of clothing—to symbolize his collection. His message includes a new order: to have respect for the clothes we wear and thus consume guided by quality and durability as opposed to the discarding promoted by the fast fashion system.

Inspecting the collection, it is possible to recognize a Northeastern footprint: the swing of the hammocks and their fringes, embroidery of bones of animal skeletons and the crosspieces worn by Lampião. The soldiers march firm like the the brave Borborema troopers, who use to carry the cotton from the backwoods to Campina Grande, at a time when Paraiba was the largest exporter of the cotton in Brazil.
“Joao Pimenta’s parade happened exactly one day before the anniversary of the emancipation of the City of São Bento. I believe this was a great tribute to our land, our home”, concludes Armando.

The event shows that the yarns and fabrics go beyond the use in decoration. They should continue to surprise and conquer both national and international markets.

The opening parade with the participation disabled athletes winners the Gold medal in world and Pan American games, to the sound of the orchestra Neojibá project from Bahia, which teaches music education and also how to make the instruments to low-income people—these are all made from plastic.
